The mobile glass passage SYNTOPIAN GOBOTAG was designed by Michaela Rotsch driven by the question: “Where is the place of art?” With its transparent structure and black, reflective GOBOTAG artifacts – standing for “GO Between Optical TAGging” – it becomes an art-based medium for transdisciplinary urban research. It operates within the zones where fine art, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and public urban spaces intersect.

From September 25 to October 4, 2026, SYNTOPIAN GOBOTAG will be part of A GLASS OF WAVES, a collaborative project with the collective Your Club Is Not My Club (YCINMC) for VIENNA DESIGN WEEK. YCINMC researches inclusion within club culture; using a tactile sound system, they make the exchange between Deaf culture and electronic music culture tangible as a multisensory club experience. By combining the walk-in, mobile glass passage SYNTOPIAN GOBOTAG with YCINMC’s club setting, an exchange between fine art and social design emerges as a publicly accessible place within Vienna’s urban space.

Michaela Rotsch and Kadir Fadhel present the URAUSGABE of their workbook TOPOGRAPHICAL INTERLACING MAKHAZIN (2025, 2 vols.) at Super BOOKS 6 at Haus der Kunst in Munich. Since 2018, they have been collaborating with the CENTER OF TURBULENCE RE. on the site-specific publishing format: IN SITU PUBLISHING. The ULTRAPORTABLE team: Roland Essl, Ildiko Meny and Michaela Rotsch, works in a syntopic process with Transcultural Emancipation, an audiovisual, performative inventory and an interspatial encirclement.

Michaela Rotsch brings superfluous GOBOTAG_flotsam from Rotterdam to Vienna to the FLUCC Deck.

With six glassy stands, I am bringing my work structures from the last two decades to the area of the Vienna flea market in order to give them an arabesque organization. To do this, I am mixing workpieces as artifacts without provenance into the flea market. They are indications between the individual and the pattern, glassy passages and indicative collections.

The six-part installative action was recorded on media. It will be transformed into a SLIPCASE COLLECTION with 6 books:

A public image collection is created through a process of collective image sorting with passers-by and protagonists. The PUBLIC COLLECTION is based on a find of 5000 slides with icons of European art history from antiquity to the present. How is the pre-sorted archive deconstructed and re-sorted? Under which procedural conventions is the PUBLIC COLLECTION created?

The PUBLIC COLLECTION was designed as a collective project by Michaela Rotsch (visual art), Juliane Zellner (urban studies) and Rob Lugo (media).

Potsdam, in the transparent lab of the SYNTOPIC SALON –> SYNTOPISCHER SALON, 90 neurospora crassa cultures, petri dishes, acrylic sheet, 300 x 80 cm

90 GOBOTAGS have been grown in cultures of the model organism “neurospora crassa” and installed in a transparent „laboratory“ at the Neuer Markt in Potsdam. The laboratory here acts like an incubator for the tissue culture of the „between“ represented by the GOBOTAG. The “laboratory” separates the growing cultures from the clean, newly-renovated urban environment. Over a period of two weeks, passersby may observe these cultures forming the black outline of the GOBOTAG.

In cooperation with Manfred Gödel (biology), the institute of medical psychology, Ludwigs-Maximilians-Universität München and the Berlin Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften.

Interdisciplinary discussion with: Manfred Gödel (Biology), Michaela Rotsch (Fine Arts), Ingeborg Reichle (Art History), Ernst Pöppel (Neurosciences) and passersby at the Neuer Markt about cultures of the “space between” and world views.

The SYNTOPIAN REFUGE materializes in a temporary micro-space that manifests a transportable protective skin. GOBOTAG_STATION presents a public opinion becomes sculpture. The installation is based on a multi-part urban happening, which employed a pedestrian opinion poll on five vedute of Munich and Istanbul. The choices of the passers-by were converted into a six-part “diagram sculpture”. The sculpture presents a public opinion become sculpture. It is based on urban happening GOETHE–SIRKECI.

This employed a pedestrian opinion poll on five vedute of Munich and Istanbul. The choices of the passers-by were converted into a five-part floor sculpture recalling a three-dimensional diagram as used in statistical investigations. This ‘diagram sculpture’ consists of mockups of five piles of the vedute, the height of each pile depending on how often a veduta has been chosen. Every vedute is tagged by a GOBOTAG. Therefore it becomes a TAGGED IMAGE.

Upcoming:

This diagram sculpture is one part of a multi-part urban happening which next stop is taking place at Sirkeci a trainstation in Istanbul in september the 7th. From september the 9th the sculpture is being presented in the installation SYNTOPIAN REFUGE_GOBOTAG STATION at the exhibition –> “cityscale” in Siemens Sanat, Istanbul.

Culture

The cultivation of GOBOTAG as an organic material (using the funghi Neurospora crassa) has begun. The GOBOTAG, the original invisible space between two figures, grows as a living, organic, molecular structure. The figures are not growing as in GATTACA, but the gap between them is cultivated and grows more visible over time.
